Documentary Projects during the 90s
During the time when video tapes ruled your possibilities of multiple generations of degraded video images and multiple formats competed for the new industry of massive video production, my peers and I at our time as instructors with the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, patrocinated and produced several mini documentary projects of our students and some of our own interest. Regarding the technical limitations, we never stop pushing the limits of the equipment to obtain cinematographic images with TV equipment. |

Low lighting conditions and clipped compressed files DSLR cameras are excellent tools to capture video. Unfortunately recording with deep shadows and extreme highlights, push the limits of MP4 compression preserving the colour information, resulting in clipping highlight (sec.25 and 51) or dirty shadows. That technical problem can be easily corrected illuminating the interior of the room and closing the aperture, but contradicts the purism of documetarial photography. The real solution in this case is the use of a camera capable to record RAW video to bring the details inn the shadows and correctly expose the highlights. |
Low contrast and mixed lighting conditions Sometimes recording video with DV cameras in mixed lighting conditions and non calibrated monitors, results in low contrast and over saturated mid tones and highlights. This correction of color was intended to compensate those problems as well the over exposure in some camera shots and compressed files. |
